Level 2 Home EV Charging

A Level 2 charger operates at 240 volts and provides significantly faster charging than a standard 120V household outlet. Most EVs fully charge overnight on a Level 2 circuit. Level 2 chargers are compatible with virtually all electric vehicles sold in the United States using the standard J1772 connector; many also include a CCS or NACS adapter depending on the model. Tesla vehicles use the Tesla Wall Connector, which we also install.

What We Evaluate Before Installation

Panel and Service Capacity

We perform an electrical load calculation to confirm your panel has sufficient capacity for the new circuit. A standard Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 50-amp, 240V breaker (for a 40-amp charging circuit). Some older homes with 100-amp service or heavily loaded panels may require a panel upgrade — but not every home does. We assess your specific situation and recommend only what is needed.

Charger Placement and Cable Routing

We discuss where you park, how the cable will reach your vehicle, and whether the installation is indoor (garage) or outdoor (driveway or carport). Outdoor installations require a NEMA 4 rated outlet or an outdoor-rated wall connector and appropriate weatherproof conduit. We route wiring cleanly and to code.

Tesla Wall Connector Installation in Irvine

The Tesla Wall Connector is a hardwired Level 2 charger that delivers up to 48 amps of charge to compatible Tesla vehicles. It requires a dedicated 60-amp circuit and a licensed electrician for installation. EL-FI Homes installs Tesla Wall Connectors to manufacturer specifications and applicable California electrical code, including the required permit and inspection.

Permitting and Inspection in Irvine

The City of Irvine requires an electrical permit for EV charger installations. EL-FI Homes pulls the permit, completes the installation, and schedules the final inspection with the city building department. Work is never performed without the required permits.

When a Panel Upgrade May Be Needed

Not every home requires a main panel upgrade to support an EV charger. However, if your existing panel is at capacity, has a limited service size (some older homes have 100-amp service), or you are also planning to add solar, a battery, or HVAC equipment, a panel upgrade may be worth considering at the same time. We hold a C10 electrical license and can handle main panel upgrades in Irvine as a separate or combined project.
